Longtime Westchester resident Sue Slaton, who was actively involved in several community organizations and functions, passed away Monday, October 22nd, in Marina del Rey. She was 46.
Slaton was born July 31st, 1961 in Pontiac, Michigan. She grew up in Williamson, New York with her four brothers and three sisters.
Slaton’s professional career included working as a manager for Marathon Nutrition and a representative for Foster Culver Electronics Company, but friends said she was “the consummate community service person who created little miracles wherever she lived.”
Slaton lived the ideals of the Pay It Forward Foundation, friends said. Throughout the Westside and South Bay areas Slaton was always volunteering to better people’s lives and the community, according to friends.
She was a supporter of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Pacific station and worked for the education of public safety through the Community Police Advisory Board (CPAB). Slaton also spearheaded the formation of the community awareness Web site, www.Pacific Beat.net/.
The various community activities Slaton was involved in included Westchester Streetscapes, the annual Westchester Holiday Parade and the LAPD Explorer DAP (Deputy Auxiliary Police) Gardening Program.
As a member of the Westchester Neighbors Association, she headed the support programs for the Mar Vista Family Center educational book drive and supported the LAPD holiday toy giveaway.
Slaton worked with many local schools to teach self-reliance and emergency preparedness and was active in the CERT (Community Early Response Team) program, bringing many people together in the effort.
She is survived by her “dearly beloved,” Ron Caruso; her mother, Patricia; three brothers Dave, Noel and Tim; three sisters Michelle, Cindy and Juanita; and many friends.
A funeral mass was held Saturday, October 27th, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hermosa Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Slaton’s memory may be made to the Pay It Forward Foundation P.O. Box 552, Cambria, CA, 93428, or www.payitforward foundation.org/.
