A man suspected in an armed robbery in Torrance remains in guarded condition at a local hospital after he was shot by police following a vehicle chase that ended in Westchester June 6, police said.

The incident began at about 11:25 a.m., when Torrance police received a call regarding a suspect who allegedly stole a man’s briefcase at gunpoint in the 3800 block of Del Amo Boulevard.

The victim told police that the suspect fled the area driving a grey Ford SUV with no license plates.

After Torrance police officers located the suspect’s vehicle entering the 405 Freeway at Hawthorne Boulevard, they followed the vehicle northbound to the westbound 105 Freeway, Sgt. Jennifer Uyeda said. The suspect’s vehicle then exited the freeway and continued onto Imperial Highway, where officers attempted to stop the car, but the suspect failed to yield and a pursuit ensued into Westchester, Uyeda said.

Police attempted to disable the suspect’s vehicle using their car at Sepulveda Boulevard and HowardHughes Parkway, where an officer involved shooting occurred, but the suspect continued to flee, Uyeda said.

Officers managed to successfully stop the vehicle in the area of Manchester Avenue and Airport Boulevard, after the suspect allegedly drove toward them and police fired at the suspect, wounding him, Uyeda said. The suspect did not shoot at police and no officers were injured, she said.

After the suspect got out of the vehicle and jumped over a wall into a nearby apartment complex, he was taken into custody, Uyeda said. The suspect, who is on parole, was transported to a local hospital for treatment, she said.

Two replica handguns were recovered at the scene, Uyeda said. Police said the suspect was driving a rented vehicle.

The case remains under investigation by Torrance police. Los Angeles police assisted with re-directing traffic in the Westchester area and will assist in the investigation of the officer involved shooting. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call Torrance Police Department detectives at (310) 618-5570.
