The City of Santa Monica Office of Sustainability and the Environment has scheduled a free three-hour orientation workshop Saturday, November 15th, regarding the Sustainable Landscape Grant Program.

The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at the Santa Monica College Math Complex. Registration is required, as seating is limited. To register, (310) 434-3400, or

Representatives of the Office of Sustainability and the Environment say that sustainable landscaping practices save water through intelligent plant selection and advanced irrigation systems. In addition, these practices significantly reduce air and water pollution and solid waste generation, the representatives said.

The city’s Sustainable Landscape Grant Program is being re-introduced for the remainder of this year and for all of next year as funds allow. Grant applications are available online or at Santa Monica City Hall and the city is holding the orientation workshop to assist property owners in getting started.

Among the discussion topics of the workshop are:

grant application process;

scope of the grant;

preparing and submitting landscape and irrigation plans;

choosing proper irrigation equipment;

selecting climate appropriate plant material; and

what to consider when hiring a landscape professional.
