Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the 19th century tale of a man determined to seek vengeance, will be performed at the Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica.
Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3; and 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 at the playhouse, 1130 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica.
Those attending the Halloween performance are encouraged to come in costumes, and prizes will be awarded, said event organizers.
The show is presented by Pacific Opera Project, which works to bring affordable, accessible opera to general audiences.
While Sweeney Todd is considered musical theater, rather than opera, organizers say that “the Stephen Sondheim score is so rich, challenging, complex and demanding that it cries out for opera-trained voices, and Pacific Opera Project has them – some of the best opera singers (who are also good actors), plus a live, nine-piece orchestra.”
The cast includes Phil Meyer as Sweeney, Amanda Carlin as Mrs. Lovett, Hallie Silverston as Johanna, Tim Campbell as Anthony, and E. Scott Levin as Turpin. Other cast members are Robert Norman, Rachel Payne, Eddie Sayles, Alex Rodin Mendoza and David Fetterman.
The Nov. 2 performance is a “cover cast” performance, which includes Ryan Thorn, Alexis Wesley, Campbell, Emma-Grace Dunbar, Christopher Remmel, Michael Lee Smith, Emily Works, Kyle Patterson, Rodin Mendoza and Fetterman.
The show is directed by Josh Shaw, and Stephen Karr conducts the nine-piece orchestra.
General admission is $30, students and seniors are $20, and Santa Monica residents with identification are $25. Reservations, (323) 739-6122. Online ticketing, www.pacificoperaproject.com.
