A fundraiser to support Venice poet and writer Artie Colatrella, who is battling cancer, is scheduled from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, September 27th at the Talking Stick Coffee Lounge, 1411 Lincoln Blvd., Venice.
Many artists and friends plan to perform various pieces of Colatrella’s work at the event to show their support.
Originally from New Jersey, Colatrella has made Venice his home for many decades. He
has been a professional songwriter and is the author of two books of poems, “Ghosts of Closure,” and his current book, “The Empty Aisle.”
Colatrella has worked with many local and some established artists over the years including, Frank Stallone, Nicolette Larson, Lisa Nemzo, Lee Curreri, Billie Burnor and Shaundra Beri, friends said. His songs have been featured in TV shows such as “Party of Five” and “Felicity.”
Colatrella has been battling renal cancer and as a result, he had a kidney removed two years ago, friends said. This past March he was diagnosed with the same cancer, which has now spread to his lungs.
Friends note that he has not been able to receive the necessary chemotheraphy treatments and his Medi-cal is still pending after six months. Colatrella, who has been unable to work, is awaiting treatment October 2nd and friends say they are holding the fundraiser to help make his road to recovery easier.
Colatrella hopes that his recent book of poems, “The Empty Aisle,” will be published, and five limited autographed copies will be on sale at the benefit. CDs of artists will also be on sale, with proceeds donated directly to Colatrella’s treatment.
