Local educators and members of the public are invited to an open house at reDiscover Center, 12958 Washington Blvd., Del Rey, scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 20th.

The organization, which recently received grant funding through Southern California Edison, Toyota, Durfee Foundation and Westchester Rotary Club, provides recycled materials to classrooms, festivals and other organizations committed to the reuse of materials for arts and education.

The center, which obtains donated scrap materials from local businesses, recently won five competitive grants — Southern California Edison ($5,000), Toyota ($5,000), Durfee Foundation ($50,000 over two years) and Westchester Rotary Club ($750).

Additionally, reDiscover is the recipient of a 2007 Sustainable Quality Award sponsored by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, Sustainable Works and the City of Santa Monica to recognize businesses and organizations that are committed to sustainable practices, social respon- sibility and economic development.

The open house is designed to be a hands-on, participatory event where educators can learn about the benefits of using reusable materials in the classroom and create their own designs.

Among the scheduled activities at the open house are artist demonstrations and a reDiscover exhibit. Visitors can also shop for low-cost recycled materials, including cones, tubes, fabric and leather.

Admission is free.
