Team Santa Monica swimmer Andi Murez captured a victory in the 100-meter freestyle event at the 2008 Speedo Champions Series California/Nevada Gold Spring Championship meet, held Saturday and Sunday, March 8th and 9th, at the Marguerite Recreation Center in Mission Viejo.

Seeded first after a strong preliminary swim, Murez took off from the start and never looked back in the finals, winning the race with a time of 57.8, a new personal record.

The Venice High School junior also scored in the 200-meter freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Teammate Robert Shilton added to the point total with three top-eight swims (100, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly), along with Devin Brady (100 backstroke), and Justin Yoshimaru (200 butterfly), who each helped the team finish 17th out of 53 scoring teams.

Murez’s time in the 100 freestyle puts her six-tenths of a second away from an Olympic Trial time standard that would earn her a trip to Omaha at the end of June for a competition that is anticipated to be one of the fastest ever, coaches said.

Team Santa Monica is a nonprofit swimming club that trains daily at the Santa Monica Swim Center.
