A 17-year-old male youth was killed and his 19-year-old friend was wounded in a shooting on Culver Boulevard in Del Rey Sunday, August 20th, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Pacific Community police said.

The two men were sitting in a car in the parking lot of a liquor store in the 11700 block of Culver Boulevard, near Slauson Avenue, in Del Rey at about 6:30 p.m., when a suspect in another vehicle parked alongside their car, LAPD Pacific Detective Joe Lumbreras said.

The suspect, described only as a Hispanic man, got out of his vehicle, approached the two victims and asked where they were from, police said. The suspect then fired several rounds into the victims’ vehicle, striking both of them, and fled in a large black SUV, Lumbreras alleged.

Witnesses told police that they heard gunfire and saw the suspect’s vehicle flee from the scene.

The 17-year-old victim, identified by police as Robert Gonzalez, of Los Angeles, and his friend, described as a Hispanic man from Los Angeles, were taken to a local hospital.

Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later and the 19-year-old victim was in stable condition, police said.

Police said the shooting appears to be gang-related.
