Sophia Sarlo, from Venice, won the Interscholastic Surfing Federation State Championship in women’s shortboarding the weekend of May 20th and 21st.
Sarlo competed against the state’s top high school girl surfers in 16 beach start heats.
She also placed fourth in the women’s longboarding event.
She is the granddaughter of the late C.J. and Shirley Sarlo, the founders of Sarlo Income Tax on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice.
Sarlo recalls her grandfather C.J. Sarlo teaching her and her brother Colton how to swim at the Marina City Club pool.
“My grandfather was a lifeguard at Venice Beach for years, and my dad Allen and uncle Mike were raised on the sand and in the water,” Sarlo said. “So, I guess it’s part of my genetics to be a water baby.”
She also credits her surfing skills to water polo, which she plays with the Los Angeles Zone team for girls under age 18.
