Legendary Southern California recording group The Four Preps will perform two shows at 2 and 6 p.m. Monday, July 4 at the Marina del Rey Hotel, 13534 Bali Way.
Their playlist during the holiday concerts will include a long-awaited performance of their classic hit “26 Miles” in the Marina.
“It’s really amazing when you think about it”, says Bruce Belland, co-founder and lead singer of The Four Preps who is in his 57th year of fronting the group.
“I mean, we were all Westside beach kids and yet, when “26 Miles” hit number No. 1 we went off to do shows around the world and never got the chance to sing at Marina del Rey, a place we had all watched come into being and we saw as the ultimate cool place to hang.”
As the only original member of The Four Preps still actively performing, Belland said he loved the idea of going back on tour and once again singing lead in a harmony ensemble. The original group, comprised of Belland, Marv Ingram (first tenor), Glen Larson (baritone) and Ed Cobb (bass), was first signed by Capitol records in 1956.
“I’ve always envied performers who have a home base to come back to and perform for their friends on a regular basis,” he said. “Bobby Short had his Caf/ Carlyle. Wayne Newton had the Flamingo… why can’t the Preps have a home base where, now and then, we can sing the Oldies for our friends just for the fun of it? I’m hoping this leads to something like that.”
A recent PBS Special “Magic Moments” hosted by Pat Boone and the McGuire Sisters and featuring musical icons like Pattie Page, Debbie Reynolds, The Chordettes, The Four Lads and Aces and the Crew Cuts also featured a guest shot by The Four Preps.
In forming the newest version of the Preps, Belland has surrounded himself with three veterans of other famous groups, Bob Duncan, who was with The Diamonds for 20 years, and Skip Taylor and Michael Redman from the Crew Cuts.
“This is the most fun I’ve ever had as a Prep,” Belland said. “We’ll do all the great Oldies and to finally sing them at the Marina… well, that’s the icing on the cake.”
Admission is $20. Tickets are sold at the door.
