A 23-year-old transient has been charged with allegedly stabbing another transient to death during a fight on the Venice Beach Boardwalk Feb. 24, police said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a murder charge Monday, Feb. 28 against Billy Young in connection with the fatal stabbing of Kevin Hirtle, 38, police said.
The two men, who knew each other as transients that frequent the Venice Boardwalk area, were outside on the boardwalk near Westminster Avenue at about 6:05 p.m. when they became involved in some type of dispute, Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Det. Luis Carranza said.
During the fight, Young allegedly stabbed Hirtle numerous times in the torso with a knife and then fled the area, Carranza said. Hirtle was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Young attempted to run but was found several blocks away by officers who listened to the crime broadcast, police said. The suspect allegedly had blood on his hands and clothes and was identified by witnesses at the scene, Carranza said.
A weapon was also recovered, he said. The motive for the attack was under investigation.
