Two members of the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) debate team — Sean Mumper and Matt Contreras — have received a pre-season number one ranking in an independent Internet poll. More than 200 National Parliamentary Debate Association members voted in the competition.

Mumper, a senior majoring in political science and mathematics, and Contreras, a sophomore majoring in communication studies and political science, were ranked number one among the debate association debate teams.

“Loyola Marymount University has a rich tradition in forensics,” said Jay Busse, university debate director.

“LMU teams have placed first in over 200 invitational tournaments in more than four decades of intercollegiate competition.” he said.

“Mumper and Contreras are well prepared to defend our decades-long record of debate excellence.”

The debating association ranked Mumper and another LMU student Alex Merton in ninth place out of more than 1,000 teams for the 2004-2005 debate season.

As a freshman, Contreras went undefeated at the Claremont National Round Robin parliamentary tournament and ranked as a top speaker at the UC Berkeley Golden Gate Invitational.
