Team Santa Monica swimmers Andi Murez and Alex Silvester participated in the United States Swimming Spring Championships, which took place March 27th through April 1st at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York.

The annual swim meet closed the short course season and brought together swimmers from across the country.

It was the first time at the meet for both Team Santa Monica swimmers and the team had not had representation at the competition for a number of years, coaches said.

Murez, a 15-year-old sophomore at Venice High School, competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events.

She said of her visit to New York, ìIt was a great experience. I learned a lot and enjoyed swimming at that level of competition.î

Silvester, 21, has been a longtime member of Team Santa Monica and will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania this spring.

Silvester said it was his lifelong swimming goal to compete in the national meet and he realized his dream at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming League Championships in March, when he qualified to swim the 100-meter breaststroke, placing fifth overall.

ìGoing to seniors was one of my swimming goals,î Silvester said. ìI am glad I was able to participate in the meet.î

Coach Jon Carroll, who made his first trip to the Nationals as a Team Santa Monica coach, said, ìBoth Andi and Alex are wonderful ambassadors for our team and I was proud to be able to experience the meet with them.

ìFor Alex, the meet culminated a wonderful swimming journey, and for Andi, it is the beginning of what I foresee as a dis- tinguished swimming career.î
