The Venice American Legion Post 177 held a POW/MIA event Oct. 27 to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action.

The members were called to attention as U.S. Army veteran Rich Magyar and U.S. Navy veteran Dan Baccelliere placed the POW/MIA flag on the vacant chair at the Remembrance Table. The Remembrance Table was a temporary monument to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who were missing in action or prisoners of war.

An empty chair represents the missing comrade(s) that the table commemorates. The white tablecloth is symbolic of the pure heart of the American service person. The symbolic table will be on display during the Westchester Elks Veterans Day program at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Westchester Elks Lodge, 8025 W. Manchester Ave., in Playa del Rey.

Anton Acherman was the POW/MIA event’s featured speaker and told of his time working in Indonesia when the Japanese invaded the country. Even though he was a civilian who was working for a Dutch company and had a Netherlands passport, Acherman said he was placed in a Japanese concentration camp.

The order had been placed to kill all members in the concentration camp after the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, but when Japan surrendered, all of the prisoners were released, he recalled. Seventeen percent of the prisoners died in the three and a half years that Acherman was imprisoned.
