Memorial Day weekend activities at the Venice Beach Recreation Center will include powerlifting and bodybuilding competitions, martial arts demonstrations, boxing, and live music.
Kicking off the festivities will be the Muscle Beach Sumo Classic, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28. The entry fee is $40.
The Sunday, May 29 schedule features “Martial Arts at Muscle Beach,” including stick fighting, hand-to-hand combat and “brick smashing” demonstrations. Dance performances and live entertainment are also part of the program.
The “Rumble in Venice” amateur boxing event will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. May 29. Bouts are sanctioned by USA Boxing, matching members of different military branches, National Collegiate Boxing Association institutions (including USC and UCLA), and USA Boxing affiliated clubs.
On Memorial Day Monday, May 30, the Muscle Beach International Classic & Armed Forces Championship bodybuilding, figure, and bikini contests is open to all amateur athletes. The entry fee is $80.
In conjunction with this will be the “Battle of the Branches” Armed Forces Bodybuilding Championship, which is open to all active, reserve, National Guard, and retired armed forces personnel. The entry fee is $80. Prejudging for both competitions will begin at 10 a.m., with the finals at 1 p.m.
Other event highlights will include a scheduled appearance by Elaine LaLanne, wife of the late fitness legend Jack LaLanne, as Muscle Beach pays its final farewell to LaLanne.
In addition, actor Ryan Phillipe and boxing sensation “Sugar” Shane Mosley are scheduled to present Rich Gaspari, the 1989 winner of the 1st Arnold Classic, with the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame Award.
The parade of athletes and national anthem will begin at 1 p.m. and include a March Air Reserve Base C-17 flyover.
At the conclusion of the competition the U.S. Air Force music ensemble “Mobility” will perform from 4 to 6 p.m.
Representatives of military branches will have recruitment booths and static displays, and vendors from the health and fitness industry will be on hand with information and giveaways all three days.
