A 41-year-old Venice man who was riding a motorcycle on a neighborhood street was killed after he partially struck a cyclist and crashed into a tree Sunday, January 17th, police said.

The man, identified by the county coroner as David Minassian, was riding his “high performance” motorcycle in the 700 block of Superba Avenue near Shell Avenue at 12:10 p.m., when he attempted to pass some cyclists riding on the road, Sgt. Roy Ballesteros of the Los Angeles Police Department West Traffic division said.

As he was passing, Minassian “ended up clipping” one of the bicycle riders, lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a tree, Ballesteros said. Minassian, who was wearing a helmet and full protective gear, sustained head injuries and was transported to the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Ballesteros said.

The cyclist who was struck was taken to a local hospital after complaining of injuries and was later released, he said.

It was not known how fast the motorcycle was traveling at the time of the accident, he said. The collision was under investigation.
