Virgil “Sam” Harpenau, a longtime Westchester resident and real estate agent who worked for several agencies during his more than 30-year career, died Monday, April 7th. He was 70.
Harpenau was born December 23rd, 1937 in Fall City, Nebraska and spent his early years in Nebraska and Missouri. He attended Brook Hurst College in Kansas City. After college Harpenau served three years in the U.S. Navy and was based in San Diego. During his tour, Harpenau made several Pacific cruises aboard a destroyer to the Far East.
Harpenau fell in love with California and settled in Los Angeles, where he began his career as a successful real estate agent in 1970 and worked until his retirement in 2002, friends said.
Harpenau worked for several real estate agencies in Westchester over his 30-year career, including Hetting & Company Realty, Kent Realty, Prudential, and Remax.
Harpenau is survived by his two children, Marc Harpenau and Jill Smith; granddaughter Ella Smith; brother Richard Harpenau of Kansas City, Missouri; and sister Mildred Harpenau of Falls City, Nebraska.
Memorial services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12th, at Visitation Church in Westchester. A celebration of life will immediately follow the memorial services, at 6436 Nancy St., West- chester.
