The Westchester High School Comets are continuing their path toward another state Division I championship after soaring to the Southern California Regional Division I title with a 53-39 victory over King High School of Riverside at UCLAís Pauley Pavilion Saturday, March 14th.

The regional championship came after a thrilling win over rival Fairfax High in the semifinals, where Dwayne Polee made a shot with four seconds remaining to give the Comets (34-2) a 55-54 victory. Polee finished with ten points in the game, in which Westchester had to fight back from seven points behind in the fourth quarter.

The Comets added the Southern California Division I title to their seventh City Section championship of the decade. The team earned the city title with a 60-55 win over Taft High.

In the regional final, Westchester jumped out to an early 18-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Comets again held King to single digits in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 29-16 lead.

Point guard Dominique OíConnor led the Comets with 14 points in the game, while Jordin Mayes contributed 12 points. Polee added 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Comets have reached the state Division I title game for the first time since taking home the championship in 2005. They will look to capture their fourth state crown this decade against McClymonds High School of Oakland at ARCO Arena in Sacramento Saturday, March 21st.
