The Westchester-Del Rey Neighborhood Girl Scouts recognized six local girls June 10th who have earned the highest honor in Girl Scouting this year, the Girl Scout Gold Award.

The local Girl Scout Gold Award winners are Megan Hughes, Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies; Megan Kinsella, Notre Dame Academy; Geena Stellato, Bishop Montgomery High School; Jennifer Chandler, Notre Dame Academy; Alexandra Gray, Notre Dame Academy; and Catalina Kelleghan, Notre Dame Academy.

The Gold Award is a national award with national standards and each recipient of the award must have completed an individual service project that required a minimum of 65 service hours.

The service hours are in addition to those the girls have devoted to badge-earning and leadership activities, which prepared them to become a candidate for the Gold Award, according to a troop spokesperson.

Approximately 5,500 girls received the Gold Award last year, a number that represents 5.4 percent of the eligible registered Girl Scouts in grades ten to 12 nationwide, according to the Girl Scouts Web site, www.girlscouts .org/.
