In high school boys basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets captured one of the only titles they missed last season with a 55-52 victory over Dominguez High School in the championship game of the Comets’ own tournament, the Westchester Tip-Off Classic Saturday, December 10th.

The defending Los Angeles City Section champion and state Division I champion Comets (4-0) faced Dominguez in the Tip-Off championship last season and were handed their first loss of the successful season.

But Westchester was ready to avenge the loss and started the new season off with its own tournament title by holding off Dominguez (3-1).

The Comets reached the Tip-Off final after victories over Blair High School, West Torrance High School and a semifinal win over Centennial High School.

Dominguez took a 31-26 halftime lead, but Westchester took the lead for good late in the third quarter and outscored the Dons 26-21 in the second half.

Junior guard Isaiah Jenkins led Westchester scoring with 19 points, including three three-pointers.

Sophomore Jarred Dubois finished with ten points, junior Dane Suttle added five points and senior Ahmaad Cook, who was named tournament MVP (Most Valuable Player), also contributed five points for Westchester.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings were defeated 68-55 by visiting Archbishop Mitty High School of San Jose Saturday, December 10th.

The Vikings (3-3) reached the final of the Mira Costa Tournament against Carson High School by opening the season with three consecutive victories, but St. Bernard has since lost three games.

Senior guard Winsor Williams had 16 points and senior forward Vince Hill added ten points in the loss to Archbishop Mitty.

The St. Monica High School Mariners lost 66-47 to Savanna High School of Anaheim in the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament Saturday, December 10th.

Senior guard John Khela led St. Monica (3-5) with 25 points and three rebounds and senior Zack Laguardia added nine points and nine rebounds.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets picked up a commanding 40-16 victory over Banning High School in the South Torrance High School Winter Shoot Out Tournament Saturday, December 10th.

The Comets (5-4) took a 20-6 lead at halftime and held Banning to five points in both the third and fourth quarter.

Sophomore Olivia Reese led Westchester scoring with 13 points and five rebounds and junior Kala McCoy added ten points and seven rebounds.

The Venice High School Gondoliers defeated Aliso Niguel High School 62-47 in the South Torrance High Winter Shoot Out Saturday, December 10th.

The Gondoliers (5-2) led 38-28 at halftime. Junior Shannon Nakamine had a game-high 20 points, including five three-pointers, and senior Ivory Blockmon also finished in double-digits with 12 points and ten rebounds for Venice.

Santa Monica High School won 56-36 over Beverly Hills High School in the Marlborough Tournament Saturday, December 10th.

The Vikings (6-1) held a narrow 26-24 halftime lead, but picked up their defense in the second half and limited Beverly Hills to only four points in the fourth quarter.

St. Monica High School lost 67-38 to visiting West Torrance High School Friday, December 9th.

Junior forward Melissa Palmieri led the Mariners with ten points and four rebounds and junior guard Alexandria Pegnato finished with eight points and four rebounds for St. Monica (1-1).
