Cheerleading squads from two local schools recently picked up championship trophies to add to their successful seasons.

The Westchester Lutheran School cheer squad won back to back championships in March after the team placed first in the Spirit International State Championship at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal Studios and took first place a week later at the NCA/NDA Knott’s Classic Championship.

The cheerleaders earned the championships after practicing since the summer on their gymnastics, strength training, stunting, and competition routines, coaches said. The squad cheers for the middle school volleyball and basketball teams, and has performed at various schoolwide events.

Westchester Lutheran squad members include Aycka Lima, Star Masterton, Ben Matsunaga, Preston Simpson, Pooja Singh, Cheyenne VanEvery, Natalie Coleman, Marian Gilroy, Hannah Hurst, Krystal Jones, Kristina Lorenzo, Preeti Singh, Alyssa Bryan, Catherine Fisher, Maddie Fisk, Hayley Harris, Bianca Jacobson, Grace Panosian, and Emma Rohrbacher.

The team is coached by Marge Packman, Isabella Pando, Maggie Stamberger and Abbey Lauten.

Another local cheer team taking home a title was the Marina Del Rey Middle School Mariners team, which captured the national championship trophy for middle schools by defeating a Texas team at the American Showcase National Championships at the Anaheim Convention Center last month.

The Marina Middle School squad additionally took home the Sportsmanship Award over 17 other teams in the competition.

The team includes 18 girls coached by Lindsey Farris and strictly performs in competitions.
