The Los Angeles Parks Foundation plans to unveil a plaque at the Mar Vista Recreation Center Thursday, March 5th, recognizing the nearby Windward School’s support of the park.
A reception is scheduled at 5:15 p.m., with a plaque dedication ceremony scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. at the park, 11430 Woodbine St., Mar Vista.
Windward School, founded by writer and teacher Shirley Windward in 1971, has been located at 11350 Palms Blvd. in Mar Vista since 1982.
Former Mar Vista Park Advisory Board chair Tom Ponton noted that the school has long been involved in efforts at the park, offering volunteers for festivals and beautification projects and helping provide amenities for facilities such as the hockey rink.
In March 1986, Windward School helped dedicate the playground at Mar Vista Park, as school families helped raise $150,000 for the project, school communications director Stephen Johnson said.
“We’ve always felt it’s important to be good neighbors and to support our local community,” Windward Head of School Tom Gilder said.
“Windward has always had an obligation to be active, constructive members of the community. Given these times of economic hardship, it’s important to remember to step in and help when you can.”
The school hopes to raise an additional $25,000 each year from its parent body as part of the city’s Adopt-a-Park program, Johnson said.
