A 53-year-old woman died after falling into the water in the 2300 block of Grand Canal in Venice Thursday, December 16th, Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Division Detective Mike DePasquale said.

The woman, who was identified as Carolynn Taylor, was found in the water of the canal at about 7:20 p.m., DePasquale said. Her last known address was in Salem, Oregon.

Witnesses reported seeing someone in the canal and called police, who responded along with the Los Angeles City Fire Department, DePasquale said.

One witness reportedly pulled the woman out of the water, he said.

Taylor, who was alone, was taken to Centinela Freeman Marina Campus, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m., he said.

A coroner’s autopsy Monday, December 20th, determined that the cause of death was accidental drowning.

Police have not determined the cause of the accident, but it is suspected that Taylor may have hit her head before entering the water, DePasquale said. The autopsy found no evidence of a head injury, the coroner’s office said.
